How Dr. Middlebrook shattered analog paradigms

Steve Taranovich
Posted by Steve Taranovich on May 13, 2012

Professor R.D. Middlebrook, professor of Electrical Engineering at California Institute of Technology showed young engineers how to increase their productivity by using design-oriented analysis to obtain low entropy expressions. We lost Middlebrook in April of 2010 from an illness, but his penchant to help engineering graduates to transition from student to engineer more effectively and efficiently ...... Medical home monitoring services with integrated connectivity—Do Baby Boomers agree?

Steve Taranovich
Posted by Steve Taranovich on May 9, 2012

The Swedish research firm Berg Insight recently released a report finding that about 2.2 million people worldwide were using remote health monitoring devices by the end of 2011. More than 200 million people in Europe and the US suffer chronic disease that could be handled at home rather than the hospital with remote monitoring, according to the Administration on Aging (AOA). My friend, Steven Dean ...... Read More

EDN panel discussion: Optimizing the sensor signal chain for low power design

Steve Taranovich
Posted by Steve Taranovich on May 8, 2012

Designers are challenged more and more to develop new architectures in the signal chain with an eye on low power dissipation. Energy harvesting, energy scavenging, portable hand-held, medical implants and more, are all the buzz-words we hear every day that want to implement designs to allow the battery to last longer or, to take it a step further, to eliminate the battery as part of the power mana ...... Tesla---Connecting the dots

Steve Taranovich
Posted by Steve Taranovich on April 27, 2012

Dr. Simos’ presentation on Tesla was eye-opening as well as mathematically and theoretically rigorous in showing that some of Tesla’s ideas that were dismissed over a century ago are now seen in a different light. This due to looking back and showing that the ideas, far advanced for the time, are now shown to comply with Maxwell’s equations and do not violate any classical law ...... Read More

Hello my fellow analog junkies! I’m the new guy at EDN—Kudos to Paul Rako, who has done a stellar job on this blog site over the past few years and I wish him well in his new endeavor—we have already crossed paths at DESIGN West 2012 in San Jose a month ago at a mentoring session for university students. A passion we both share as well as enjoying analog engineering for a good ...... Read More

Rako is headed to Analog Devices

Paul Rako
Posted by Paul Rako on December 17, 2011

It is with a sad heart I tell you that I am leaving EDN today. Next year I will start at Analog Devices. I will be working here in the Silicon Valley office. I loved my gig here at EDN, but Analog Devices asked me to get back to the bench and work on amplifier tools. In preparing for my recent article on error budgets, I fired up my old copy of PSpice and ran a few Monte-Carlo simulations. It remi ...... Read More

I was lucky enough to go to the Texas Instruments tech day here in San Jose last week. It was fantastic and I encourage all engineers to attend this an other conferences like our famous ESC conference now rebranded DESIGN West, if only because EDN’s own Margery Conner will be running her hardware design conference for LEDs as part of the show. . TI’s tech days were run like a mini ...... Read More

LTspice seminar with Mike Engelhardt

Paul Rako
Posted by Paul Rako on December 11, 2011

Last week I was lucky enough to get tipped off about the last seminar this year for Linear Technology’s free Spice program, LTspice. The seminar was given by the author of the program, Linear Tech employee Mike Engelhardt. From hanging around LT design engineers, I have heard that there is a little PSpice DNA in the company. Mike once said that he hired a former PSpice programmer to help wi ...... Read More
