High-speed peripherals must get on a high-speed highway to make use of all their capabilities. The PCI bus is one such highway, but on-ramps in the form of off-the-shelf, general-purpose PCI I/O controller chips are few and far between.

As PC-display resolutions increase and color depths bloom, higher refresh-rate monitors are becoming more common.
