Fig 4—Clamping amplifiers provide a smooth transition into limiting mode at both extremes of the input-signal excursion, thus preventing saturation and overload (and time lost comes out of saturation) in subsequent stages; this feature is especially useful where the dynamics of the input are not well-behaved.
