The Tuffline series of pressure transducers tolerates mechanical shock, vibration, thermal shock, RFI, corrosive media, and other extremes common in industrial environments. Model 209, the first of the series, maintains an accuracy of ±0.25% FS, hysteresis of 0.1% FS, and stability of 0.5% FS/year and meets military-standard vibration and shock specifications. The sensor also provides NEMA 4 and IP65 protection. It is available with pressure ranges from 0 to 50 psig to 0 to 5000 psig. Output is voltage or 4- to 20-mA current. The transducer costs <$100 (OEM). Setra Systems Inc, Acton, MA. (800) 257-3872.

Ratiometric linear sensor for magnetic fields.

The SS495 uses a Hall-effect IC to measure the magnetic field from a permanent magnet or an electromagnet. The supply voltage sets the ratiometric output and varies in proportion to the strength of the magnetic field. Typical applications include current sensing, motor control, position sensing, magnetic-code reading, rotary encoding, ferrous-metal detecting, vibration sensing, liquid-level sensing, and weight sensing. Power consumption is 7 mA at 5V, and the operating temperature ranges from –40 to +150°C. The 0.160× 0.118-in. sensor costs $5.65. Micro Switch, Freeport, IL. (800) 537-6945.

Micromachined pressure transducer for noncorrosive dry gases.

The XCX pressure transducer family is available in three performance grades, and the highest performance model provides combined linearity and hysteresis errors of <±0.25% FS and temperature errors of <±0.5% FS. The sensors are available in eight pressure ranges of 0 to 0.3 psi to 0 to 150 psi and in gauge, differential, and absolute-pressure versions. A 15-psia, 1%-accurate model costs <$18 (1000). Data Instruments Inc, Acton, MA. (508) 264-9550.

Fiber-optic gyroscope for land-vehicle navigation systems.

The Autogyro Navigator provides accurate measurement of vehicle turning angle and interfaces to the vehicle odometer and backup light. The information from these sources is sufficient for dead-reckoning navigation. When you use the device with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, the system provides vehicle position for automatic-vehicle-location systems, even when buildings, terrain, or foliage obscures GPS signals. An analog version costs $820, and a digital version costs $940. Andrew Corp, Orland Park, IL. (708) 349-3300.

Digitally compensated pressure transducers.

The P9000 series pressure transducers are available in ranges from 0 to 10 psi to 0 to 10,000 psi. You can configure the transducers with a variety of pressure ports, electrical outputs, and termination options. A 12-bit digital-compensation feature provides precise calibration of critical parameters. Combined nonlinearity, hysteresis, and nonrepeatability errors are guaranteed at <±0.05% FS. Total thermal error is <0.004% FS/°C from –20 to +80°C. Prices of the pressure transducers start at $543. Lucas Control Systems, Hampton, VA. (800) 745-8008.

Vibration transducer operates over wide temperature range.

The 4-130 vibration transducer operates from –65 to +500°F. Dynamic operating range is from 45 to 1500 Hz, and acceleration is from 1 to 50g pk. Output is proportional to vibration velocity, and sensitivities range from 60 to 145 mV/ips. The transducer weighs 3.5 oz and costs $850. CEC Vibration Products, Pomona, CA. (909) 468-1345.

Analog measurement sensor uses triangulation.

The KM-1 series analog measurement sensor has a 20- to 70-cm range with a 5-nsec response time. Shape, color, and the target’s material do not affect the sensor. Voltage or current output is available. The output voltage ranges from 1 to 10V with 0.05V resolution, and the output current ranges from 4 to 20 mA with 0.1-mA resolution. Temperature drift is ±0.3% FS/°C. The device operates from 24V dc at 70 mA. Aromat Corp, New Providence, NJ. (908) 464-3550.

Optical encoder for industrial applications.

The 900 Series encoders have a sealed, watertight, industrially hardened, die-cast package. The optical encoders produce 128 pulses per revolution or 256 pulses with clock conversion. A µP can directly read the digital quadrature outputs, which provide magnitude and direction of shaft rotation. Operating temperature range is –40 to +85°C. The encoder is rated for 3000-rpm operation with optional ball-bearing construction. The encoders cost $30. OakGrigsby Inc, Sugar Grove, IL. (708) 556-4200.

Temperature-sensing device controls fans and other devices.

The Thermochip supports local or remote sensing of temperature to control fan speed, heaters, and other temperature-sensing and -control equipment. The chip controls external ac or dc devices from 3 to 300W. The temperature-sensing range is –50 to +130°C, and standard accuracy is ±1%, with ±0.5% accuracy available. You can use a potentiometer or resistors to program the temperature setpoint, or it can be factory-set. The controller costs $10 (1000). MDJ Inc, OEM Products Group, Glen Alpine, NC. (704) 584-4007.

The Cube Sensor proximity switches provide a sensing range of 15 mm and can be flush-mounted. The two-wire switches operate from 20 to 140V ac or 10 to 140V dc and are available with mini- or micro-type, quick-disconnect connectors. According to the company, the devices are about one-half as long as limit switches. Standard models cost $105, and a weld-field-immune model costs $128. Efector Inc, Exton, PA. (610) 524-2000.

Humidity-sensor IC.

The IH-3605-B measures relative humidity from 0 to 100% over a temperature range of –40 to +185°F. The three-pin SIP operates from a 5V supply and provides a 0.8 to 4V linear output corresponding to 0 to 100% relative humidity. Two-point calibration establishes ±2% accuracy. Water condensation does not affect the sensor, and it resists contaminating vapors. It costs $7 (OEM). HyCal, El Monte, CA. (818) 444-4000.
