Graphics-accelerator chip set targets 3-D applications

The Voodoo Graphics 3-D graphics-accelerator chip set from 3Dfx Interactive works in 3-D applications in coin-operated/arcade and home-consumer markets. To achieve elementary 3-D functionality, the chip set supports perspective-correct polygons with point-sampled texture mapping, Z and double buffering, Gouraud shading, and VGA resolution. The chip set also includes level-of-detail MIP mapping, bilinear filtering, and SVGA resolution. It delivers realistic imagery through subpixel correction, alpha blending, and antialiasing.

The chip set also supports special effects, including fog, translucency, transparency, texture compositing, lighting techniques, animated textures, and reflection mapping. The product runs under Microsoft Windows 95, MS-DOS, and Microsoft 3.2 operating systems using 3-D application-programming interfaces, including Microsoft Direct3D, DirectDraw, 3D-DDI, and Reality Lab 2.0. Voodoo Graphics costs $75 (20,000). -- by John Gallant
