The TFDS6000 IR transceiver from Temics Telefunken Semiconductor Division provides a compact, highly integrated device to implement IrDA (Infrared Data Association) links. Wireless IR is becoming increasingly popular as a communications link and has matched the higher speed and longer distance of these links (see "Ease file transfers with IrDA-protocol wireless infrared," EDN, March 30, 1995, pg 59). The Temic device contains both the optical components and the mixed-signal functions for a full-duplex, 4-Mbps channel and requires just an external current-limiting resistor and a bypass capacitor. The 4-Mbps/3m standard is supplanting the older 115-bps/1m maximum bit rate in applications such as laptop and PC links with workstations, printers, fax machines, and cellular phones.
The TFDS6000 incorporates the IR emitter diode and its driver, the detector diode and its preamp, a comparator for received-signal AGC to minimize the effect of ambient light, and control logic. The device uses internal differential circuitry to enhance interference rejection. The plastic-packaged device measures 13×5.3 mm and is 5.6 mm high. It requires a 5V supply and consumes 5 mA in standby mode (75 µA in shutdown mode). It costs $7.25 (10,000).
