Rockwell Semiconductor’s recently introduced RCV288ACF/SP V.34 modem IC packs 28.8-kbps data-communications, V.17 fax-communications, and full-duplex speaker-phone capabilities into a 68-lead PLCC. Perhaps even more important, however, this device is pin- and-function compatible with 23 other 14.4- and 28.8-kbps modem ICs. Thus, you can design one board and easily create a wide range of communications products with this IC family. This new top end of the family costs less than $80 (10,000).
