The latest Fast Infrared (FIR) communication scheme defined by the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) boosts data transfers to speeds as high as 4 Mbps. National Semiconductor, meanwhile, has added FIR support to its SuperI/O family of core-logic products for PCs. The 4-Mbps capability will accelerate wireless communications between PCs, portable systems, printers, modems, and network nodes.
National's PC87308 and PC87338 combine FIR support with other standard interfaces, including floppy disk, parallel, and serial. Designed for desktop PCs, the 87308 also includes a keyboard and mouse controller and a real-time clock. The 87338 targets notebook applications, and both ICs include advanced power-management features and Plug-and-Play support. Both ICs are also pin-compatible with earlier members of the SuperI/O family.
National has also introduced the PC87108, which integrates a 16550 UART with FIR capabilities targeting embedded applications, such as IrDA printers and modems. The PC87308, PC87338, and PC87108 cost $19.60, $12.30, and $10 (1000), respectively, and all are shipping now. All of the ICs also support older, slower IrDA communication modes and proprietary IR schemes in products such as consumer remote controls.
