12-bit, multichannel data-acquisition IC meets industrial needs

Incorporating three synchronized A/D converters and seven S/H amplifiers, Burr-Brown's ADS7833 IC is designed for applications such as ac-motor control, three-phase power control, and uninterruptible power supplies, as well as general multichannel data acquisition. It provides conversions as fast as 6.6 µsec for a 150k-sample/sec throughput. Five of its S/H circuits sample with synchronized timing; three of the five connect to the input multiplexers for simultaneous sampling of their input channels. Onboard multiplexers allow the device to handle as many as 10 differential input channels.

You set both input channel and gain selection via a serial input word; the converters' digitized outputs are available through three serial ports compatible with DSPs, such as the Motorola DSP56004/7. Gain selection at each channel allows ranges of ±0.05, 1, 2, and 2.5V. The IC also includes an 8-bit voltage-output D/A converter for establishing setpoint or indicator levels. The IC operates from ±5V supplies and consumes 125 mW. It comes in a 68-lead PLCC and costs $26.50 (100).
