The 4000 series of stainless-steel heat exchangers provides liquid cooling without introducing contaminates. Independent test-lab data rates the 4000 series' internal cleanliness level between Class 2 and 3 when tested in accordance with National Aerospace Standard 1638. The heat-exchanger line consists of six standard sizes, ranging in area from 24 to 220 in.2 and can be purchased with or without fans. Prices start at $181 (OEM qty). Lytron Inc,Woburn, MA. The HiContact trial kit provides hands-on evaluation of liquid-cooled cold plates for cooling high-power-density electronic devices, such as IGBT inverters. The kit contains a standard 2½-in2 HiContact cold plate, product literature, and thermal-testing data. At one-third the weight and cost of conventional copper cold plates, liquid-cooled cold plates remove more than 20% more heat, without the handling problems of copper. Plates cost from $28.39 to $83.73 (100), depending on size. Aavid Thermal Technologies Inc, Laconia, NH. (603) 528-3400.

Seven pin-type heat sinks and two combination heat-sink/fan modules cool PowerPC 601, 603, and 604 microprocessors in CQFP and CBGA packages. At 200 LFM, the thermal resistances for the heat sinks are 4.5°C/W for the 2330B, 4°C/W for the 3332B, 6.5°C/W for the 2319B, 5.6°C/W for the 3320B, 5.2°C/W for the 2828B, 3.2°C/W for the 2335B, and 3.5°C/W for the 3334B. The thermal resistance of the modules is 1.6°C/W for the 2319B and 1.5°C/W for the 2321B. Each is available with an internal spring clip and mating jack to simplify assembly. The 3334B costs $1.20 (1000). Thermalloy Inc, Dallas, TX. (214) 243-4321.

Equipped with mating connectors that are rated for a minimum of 25,000 insertions, the Data Express DE100 removable frame and carrier subsystem houses an 80-pin single-connect SCSI hard drive. The unit, which can be stacked for accommodating disk arrays, is offered with hot-swapping capabilities and 8- or 16-bit interfaces. Key locks prevent unauthorized removal of the drive carrier. The DE100 costs about $300. Kingston Technology Corp, Fountain Valley, CA. (714) 435-2615.
With a 6U design, the Series 740 VMEbus system enclosure accommodates up to three disk drives, one 3.5- and two 5.25-in. half-height units, and card sizes as large as 9U×400 mm. Enclosures feature front or rear card entry and come with a 110W power supply and two side-mounted dc fans rated at 37 cfm each. Constructed of aluminum, the Series 740 meets FCC Part 15 Class B requirements. Prices start at $1050. Vector Electronic Company, Sylmar, CA. (818) 365-9661.

Built to snap on and off without tools, a plastic enclosure for DIN rail mounting is an affordable housing for low-cost relays, timers, and switching circuits. The RailRider RR-1 comes with a basic header for attachment to the DIN rail and accommodates terminal blocks on its top surface. Future RailRider versions will have terminal block assemblies at the header. Enclosures come with guides for pc boards and height-extending spacers. Prices start at $2.59.
