National Semiconductor has made it easier for system designers to interface flash memory to low-cost µCs. The company has attached its Microwire interface to the 4-Mbit NM29A040 and 8-Mbit NM29A080 NAND flash-memory devices. With this interface, you need only three wires to connect the flash and µC. The devices operate off a single 5V supply, and you can erase the flash in 4-kbyte blocks. These flash devices perform block reads and writes at 325 and 67 kbytes/sec, respectively. Both devices are available in 28-pin SOICs, although 22 of the pins are not connecting pins. The NM29A040 and NM29A080 sell for $6.55 and $12, respectively.
