AMD creates programmable-logic subsidiary
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is creating a wholly owned subsidiary of its programmable-logic division to design, develop, and market PLDs. According to the company, the purpose of creating the subsidiary is not to prepare to sell or otherwise de-emphasize AMD's programmable-logic business, but to respond more quickly to the competitive pressures of that business. The company notes the importance of continuing to develop proprietary architectures and the need for a greater emphasis on design software. The as-yet-unnamed subsidiary has access to the process technology and wafer-fab manufacturing capability of the parent company. The first visible change is the establishment of a separate dedicated sales force.
