Audio-amplifier IC provides four 22W channels
A simple-to-use power amplifier, the TDA7385 from SGS-Thomson, delivers 22W-rms output to each of its four channels into a 4V load from a 14.4V supply; its output is 18.5W/channel with a 13.2V supply. The device targets automotive applications, in which minimum external component count is critical. Gain is fixed at 26 dB, and the device requires no external compensation. The IC also includes externally controlled mute and standby functions and an automute function that silences the output when the supply is lower than a minimum operating value.
The four power outputs, which are not ground-referenced, float and are protected against short circuits to ground, supply rail, or across the load. The IC is also protected against vehicle-supply "load dump," battery reversal, ESD, and overtemperature. The TDA7385 comes in a 25-lead Flexiwatt package and costs $5.50 (10,000).by Bill Schweber
