Stereo-audio D/A converter packs features into small package
Burr-Brown's PCM1717E accepts 16- or 18-bit data and produces stereo-audio output for CD players, MPEG systems, musical-instrument digital-interface (MIDI) applications, and multimedia systems. The 5V IC features THD plus noise lower than -88 dBc, 96-dB dynamic range, and 100-dB S/N ratio. Selectable functions in this 20-lead SSOP device include soft mute, which slowly mutes the output; a 256-step digital attenuator; digitally implemented de-emphasis; and left/right/mono output modes. A "zero-detect" feature, which you can disable, controls automatic muting; this feature lets the converter avoid audible noise that may occur when the input is continuously zero.
The PCM1717E accepts data in either normal or Philips-compatible IIS format. The third-order sigma-delta converter core, eight-times oversampling digital interpolation filter, and analog output filter provide 35-dB attenuation in the stopband with ±0.17-dB ripple in the passband. Output voltage is 62% of VCC with a 5-kV load. The $3.15 (1000) IC operates with a system clock at 256 or 384 times the sampling frequency.
