Ask EDN

Desperately seeking Hall-effect sensors Several months back, I saw a section in a supplier's catalog listing several versions of a Hall-effect current sensor. These devices come in standard eight-pin DIP and SOIC packages with extra current-carrying lead bonded to the package. I misplaced the catalog and can't locate copies of these sensors. I have an application for these devices and would appreciate your help in directing me to the appropriate manu- facturer.

Senior Technical Editor Bill Travis responds: You can try contacting Allegro MicroSystems Inc (Worcester, MA (508) 853-7861). The company designs and manufactures Hall-effect sensor ICs featuring high-temperature, high-sensitivity switches. You can also try the Micro Switch Division of Honeywell Inc (Freeport, IL (815) 235-5500). Honeywell manufactures standard- and high-temperature pressure and magnetic sensors and smart transducers. Also, my article ÒElectromagnetic sensors put a spin on compassesÓ (EDN, March 14, 1996, pg 77), contains a list of sensor manufacturers.
