AC-3 is an audio-coding technique that Dolby Laboratories (San Francisco) developed in 1991 for use with the six-channel Dolby Digital movie-sound system for professional theaters. Recent Digital Video Disk specifications for home distribution of the National Television Standards Committee feature pictures include the AC-3. Multimedia and PC playback also include the device.
