Broadband system speeds Internet access

The FastInternet system from Orckit Communications lets users download files and browse the World Wide Web at 384 kbps to 8 Mbps. The system uses digital-subscriber-line (DSL) technology and supports high-bit-rate, asymmetric, symmetric, and very-high-speed DSL. The FastInternet integrates a passive plain-old-telephony-service (POTS) splitter that keeps the phone line hooked to the telephone company through an analog connection; therefore, the line remains active during a power failure.

FastInternet users can choose asymmetric or symmetric transmission at different data rates. Symmetric transmission allows the customer and Central Office to transmit at the same speed in both directions at 384, 640, or 780 kbps or at 1 or 2 Mbps. Asymmetric transmission provides 4- or 8-Mbps transmission from the Central Office to the customer. The system costs $2500 per link. A link includes the customer-premises equipment: a remote modem and a POTS splitter and bridge/router. A link also includes the Central Office equipment: a modem, a POTS splitter, and a line card.
