Siemens drives CAN 2.0B specification

A new member of Siemens 80C32-compatible µC family, the C515C, meets the recently enhanced controller-area-network (CAN) specification. The enhancements, along with cost reductions, enable the specification (version 2.0B) to address more applications, including factory automation and networked motor control. Previous versions of the standard primarily targeted automotive applications. Version 2.0B is useful in applications requiring the transfer of short data sets under tight security within an electrically hostile environment and with a guaranteed latency for high-priority messages.

The C515C integrates an on-chip CAN 2.0B interface, has 64 kbytes of ROM, 2 kbytes of SRAM, a serial-peripheral-interface-compatible synchronous interface, and a highly accurate, 10-bit ADC with a 6-nsec conversion time. The µC also has an interrupt unit with 15 possible sources on four priority levels. The C515C comes in an 80-pin MQFP package and sells for $10.80 (1000).—by Markus Levy
