1-Gbit Ethernet debuts

Alteon Networks demonstrated a 1-Gbps Ethernet network-interface card (NIC) at Networld+ Interop in Atlanta. The 1-Gbit card is compatible with existing Ethernet equipment and protocols and uses optical-fiber technology borrowed from Fibre Channel for its data link. The card follows the evolving IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet standard and includes an onboard 32-bit RISC processor to support optional product features and accommodate specification changes.

The company achieved 1-Gbit performance by using a custom ASIC to off-load performance-critical tasks and interrupts from the host system. The board also uses adaptive DMA to analyze its host system’s memory interface and modify its data-transfer technique to maximize its data rate. The NIC is scheduled to begin shipping in mid-December for less than $2000. The company also plans to have a 1-Gbit Ethernet switch available at the same time.—by Richard A Quinnell
