Multimedia connector system eliminates rats’ nests, squelches EMI

A connector and cabling system from Molex combines the connector functions for several functions into one integrated system. These functions are a keyboard, mouse, game port, monitor, and parallel printer, as well as the display-data-channel, Universal Serial Bus, and 1394 serial devices. The MicroCross system allows you to use the monitor as an I/O hub for high-frequency multimedia applications and eliminate the wiring maze usually inherent in such systems.

The system’s crossing-blade ground design provides video bandwidth exceeding 2.5 GHz on RGB and clock lines. The 35-pin mixed-signal array offers several other multimedia functions. The connector uses a redundant-contact-point terminal design for mechanical integrity and connection reliability. The use of an integrated connection system minimizes the EMI that can result from using multiple connectors and cables in high-frequency applications. The MicroCross system components include right-angle receptacles, plug assemblies, and cable-plug components. Receptacles cost $2.77 (100,000).—by Bill Travis
