Compact package keeps cool, saves space

Micrel Semiconductor has developed compact packages that offer higher performance in power electronics applications. Micrel’s MM8 (miniaturized small-outline) package features a thermal resistance (UJC) of 2448C/W junction-to-ambient thermal resistance. With a lead pitch of 0.025 in., the MM8 package measures 2.99734.877 mm, compared with 4.80036.198 mm for the standard SO-8. The MM8 has only 34% more thermal resistance than a 100%-larger, eight-lead SO package and supports more leads than do the SOT-23 and SOT-143.

The MM8 suits switch-mode power-supply applications, motor controls, pulse-transformer drivers, and Class-D switching amplifiers. The company offers five devices in the MM8 package: the MIC2951 and MIC5200 low-dropout regulators, the MIC4420 noninverting and MIC4429 inverting 6A-pk MOSFET drivers, and the MIC38C43 PWM controller. Micrel is also soliciting feedback on which of its products customers would like to see in the MM8 SO package in the future.—by NS Manju Nath, EDN Asia
