EDN's 25th Annual
Microprocessor/Microcontroller Directory

In one way or another, µPs play a role in almost every aspect of our lives—from toaster ovens to complex network-routing systems, from automobile-engine controllers to cellular phones, and from digital cameras to laser printers. Microprocessors are even replacing many, if not most, simple mechanical switches. Hence, to accommodate the growing need for µPs, the industry has grown rapidly in the 25 years since EDN delivered you the first Annual Microprocessor Directory.

Each year, EDN strives to sort out the architectural details of the dominant µP families; this year, there are almost 60. Once you pick a µP family, the next step is finding a device. To help you on this quest, EDN provides you with the industry's most comprehensive µP, µC, and DSP database. Here's how it works:

  1. Go to www.ednmag.com/
    reg/MICRO.asp
    .

  2. Click on Microprocessors and Microcontrollers.

  3. Select the parameters that you want in a processor, and hit "Search."

It's as easy as that!

For example, if you need a less-than-$25, 32-bit processor with serial I/O, check off these parameters, and you'll pull up approximately 23 devices that match these qualifications. Now, you can select a device and get details on power consumption, CPU frequency, special features, and package type. There's even a link on each device's page, "Instant Documentation," that takes you directly to the documentation for that device on the vendor's Web site. (Note: Some vendors do not offer this information.)

Alternatively, if you want to see all the processors that a company, such as Motorola, promotes, use the pulldown menu for "Company Name," and select Motorola. You'll see that this database has more than 120 devices from that company.

The real beauty of this online database is that it always remains current. Vendors can add devices at any time; you don't have to wait a year to see what's new. And the ability to sort through more than 1000 devices from various companies helps make your job easier. And that's what this Microprocessor Directory is all about.
