Category: Memory
Finalist: X-25E Extreme SATA SSD (Intel)

Intel’s highest performing solid-state drive to-date, the Intel X-25E Extreme SATA Solid-State Drive (SSD), shatters performance barriers associated with traditional hard disk drives in current server/storage models, while significantly lowering total infrastructure, cooling and energy costs in storage environments ranging from mid-sized businesses to the corporate data center.

Aimed at server, workstation and storage systems, Intel’s X-25E Extreme SATA SSD features next-generation architectural designs based on 50nm single-level (SLC) NAND flash technology and will lower the total cost of ownership for enterprise server and storage applications by more than five times vs. traditional spinning hard disk drives. And it changes the economics of enterprise data centers by increasing server, workstation and storage system performance by 100x over hard disk drives as measured in Input/Output Per Second (IOPS)—today’s key storage performance metric.

With no moving parts, SSDs offer a 7x higher Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and more than 10x increased life expectancy than hard drives. Intel’s X25-E Extreme SATA SSD can also add a level of predictability through the use of SMART technology, to help pre-determine when to swap out drives. With an up to 115x increase in IOPS read speeds and 3x the sustained bandwidth, fewer drives are needed requiring less space. A storage model which includes Intel’s X25-E Extreme SATA SSD can also lower energy costs by up to 5x.

This has been accomplished because Intel has made a number of architectural breakthroughs such as 10-channel NAND architecture with Native Command Queuing, proprietary controller and firmware efficient in advanced wear-leveling and low write amplification.
