IBM said to cut 1,315 U.S. jobs

By Colleen Taylor, Contributing Editor -- EDN, May 2, 2007

Technology giant IBM has reportedly slashed some 1,315 services-related jobs along with an unknown number of contract positions, according to a notice posted Tuesday by an AFL-CIO union of IBM employees.

The layoffs affect workers in a number of the company's segments including server systems operations, technology integration and management, and communications sector delivery, among others, the Alliance at IBM group said on its website.

The group said it plans to combat what it sees as growing threats to Big Blue's United States-based jobs. "While our ultimate goal is collective bargaining rights with IBM, we will build our union now and challenge IBM on the many issues facing employees from off-shoring and job security to working conditions and company policy," the group said Tuesday in a statement on its website.

Last year, the Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM announced plans to triple its investment in India to $6 billion over the next three years, the largest sum ever committed to the country by a U.S. company. At the time, IBM said it planned to make India "a cornerstone" in the computer service superpower's global network.

Reps at IBM could not be reached for immediate comment.
