Infineon to buy TI's DSL CPE unit

By Colleen Taylor, Contributing Editor -- EDN, June 26, 2007

Germany-based chipmaker Infineon Technologies on Monday announced plans to acquire Texas Instruments'  DSL customer premises equipment (CPE) business for an undisclosed amount.

"Combining Texas Instruments' DSL CPE products with Infineon's innovative roadmap leads to a unique end-to-end offering for DSL customers," Hermann Eul, executive VP of the Infineon management board and president of the communication solutions business group, said in a statement.

Infineon said it plans to continue supporting Texas Instruments' product portfolio and existing customer designs in addition to developing future product generations.

The buy is an anomaly of sorts for Infineon, which has recently focused on streamlining, rather than augmenting, its business model. Last year, Infineon split from its memory segment and spun it off into the now-independent entity Qimonda AG.

Reps at Infineon could not be reached for further comment on the acquisition's details.

The transaction is expected to close sometime this summer.
