Intel Debuts Chipset

Staff Reporter -- EDN, June 6, 2006

Intel has launched a new chipset to work with its Core 2 Duo-based desktop computers.  The move is the most recent effort by Intel’s to combat the recent success of its main rival, Advanced Micro Devices.

At a Tuesday keynote address at Computex, Asia's largest computer expo, Intel senior VP and general manager for the Sales and Marketing Group, Anand Chandrasekher, unveiled the new Intel 965 Express Chipset, formerly code-named Broadwater.  The new chipset is designed to work with Intel’s Core 2 Duo desktop processor, also known as Conroe, which will hit stores next month. The chipset has started shipping in volume to PC makers already.

The company said that the new releases will enable breakthrough PC performance, greater power efficiency, quieter systems and theatre-like sound quality, among other benefits. Chandrasekher also introduced Intel’s new 600SM PCI Phone Adapter, a device designed to make VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls from desktop PCs using existing telephones.

“There is a tremendous amount of excitement and anticipation for our forthcoming server, desktop and notebook processors based on the Core microarchitecture,” Chandrasekher said in a statement. “The message to the industry is simple: We are bringing a massive amount of new products and technologies to the market starting today that will change the game in terms of what technology can do for you.”
