Newark Launches Interactive RoHS Catalog
By Rob Spiegel -- EDN, April 11, 2006
Newark InOne, a Chicago-based distributor of small-quantity electronic components, has introduced an interactive Restriction of Hazardous Substances catalog that features 40,000 products that are compliant with the European Union’s RoHS directive, which takes effect on July 1 of this year.
The catalog’s interactive functionality was developed to allow engineers and component buyers to search by part number or description. The site also allows users to evaluate and buy products on the same platform. The online catalog mirrors Newark InOne’s print catalog and includes a detailed guide to RoHS compliance.
Pages can be turned one by one, or users can jump to any product category in the index, which includes semiconductors, passive components, interconnect/wire and cable, electromechanical/power/circuit protection, optoelectronics and soldering. Pages can also be flagged with an electronic note and emailed individually to colleagues or purchasing departments.
The catalog also contains tool tips. “Most component manufacturers changed their part numbers when they released their RoHS compliant versions,” said Susan Fischer, senior VP marketing/ecommerce at Newark InOne. “By scrolling over a part number, a pop-up window with the old part number will appear. This helps our customers to confirm that they are buying the right part.”
The catalog contains components from top parts manufacturers such as Texas Instruments, Maxim/Dallas, IR, National, Intersil, AMD, Fairchild, Freescale, Avago, Kester, Littelfuse, Honeywell, Tyco, Molex and Amphenol.
The catalog can be found on the home page of the company’s Web site.
