Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. saw sales in August of $822 million (27 billion Taiwanese new dollars), a decrease of 2.1 percent from July.
While TSMC gave no reason for the slip, Semico this week noted general over capacity, pushing the industry to a downturn in 2007.
Despite the sequential slip, the month’s revenue was up 16.5 percent over August 2005 and pulled the top foundry’s January through August sales total to $6.48 billion (213 billion TWD), an increase of 34.7 percent over the same period in 2005.
UMC, TSMC’s prime rival, saw its August climb both month-over-month and year-over-year to $287 million (9.4 billion TWD). However, the company noted slowing growth. For the January and August period, UMC reported sales of $2.1 billion (68.8 billion TWD), 25.4 percent higher than the same time period in 2005.
