Dell to Offer AMD-based Servers

Staff Reporter -- EDN, May 19, 2006

Dell will offer AMD Opteron processors at the high-end of its server line, in multiprocessor servers by the end of this year.

The PC company made the announcement in its Q1 earnings release Thursday, further breaking the lock hold that Intel has had on the company. Dell had previously only used Intel chips in its PCs, but earlier this year acquired a specialty PC maker, Alienware, which is processor-agnostic, using both Intel and AMD chips and marking AMD’s first entrance into the PC maker’s seemingly impenetrable fort.

“We welcome Dell, and Dell customers, to the world of AMD64,” said Marty Seyer, AMD senior VP of commercial business, in a statement. “Dell is a customer-focused company  and we’re pleased to see that they are listening to their customers and providing them the choice of innovative AMD products. We look forward to working closely with Dell in bringing the benefits of AMD leadership in performance-per-watt solutions to Dell customers.”

AMD has made gaining share in the commercial space a top priority for 2006. Making inroads into Dell, which is the largest PC maker around, marks a significant milestone in achieving that goal.
