Ultrabright LEDs offer low current, tight package

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, May 12, 2005

A series of SMT-mount LEDs from Vishay Intertechnology features extreme brightness in a 1.6-mm-long×0.8-mm-wide×0.6-mm-high package, which the vendor claims is the smallest available for this type of device (Picture). Targeting use in keypad backlighting, audio/video indicator, and battery-driven displays, these 0603 devices in the TLMx100x series are available in 628-nm, red; 605-nm, orange; and 588-nm, yellow versions with intensity of 4, 7.5, and 7.5 mcd, respectively, at typical drive current of 2 mA.

Vishay fabricates the lead-free LEDs with AlInGaP (aluminum-indium-gallium-phosphor) technology, and they offer a half-intensity power angle of 80°. The LEDs sell for $4 (100,000) per 100 pieces.
