Intel Samples Montecito

Online staff -- EDN, October 14, 2005

Following its announcement in August that it was sampling dual core servers, Intel today reaffirmed that this program does include Itanium – specifically the next generation of that server processor code-named Montecito.

“Montecito sampling has been going on for a few months,” a spokeswoman said. As previously disclosed, the chips will be comprised of 1.72 billion transistors, a new record at Intel.

The Intel spokeswoman refused to confirm that the company plans to release nine Montecito processors, a number quoted in an unconfirmed press report.

“We will not comment on unannounced products," the spokeswoman said. "We have  no new roadmap updates at this time."
