Current-sense resistor wrestles 100A
By Bill Schweber -- EDN, May 11, 2005
Low-power design is tricky, but high-current systems, such as motors, servers, and even workstations, also give unique headaches to engineers. The HLD series of current-sense resistors from Stackpole Electronics spans 0.001 to 0.1Ω with tolerance as low as 1% and temperature coefficients as low as 55 ppm/°C, depending on value (Picture). The metal-element resistors use a four-terminal Kelvin connection to ensure that the measurement path is distinct from the current-flow path and resultant connection IR drop.
According to Rob Hudspeth, marketing director at Stackpole, “The metal element … saves board space compared to power wire-wound resistors with similar ratings.” Resistors in this series sell for approximately $1.50 (1000) each.
