AMD still optimistic on NY fab

The city of Malta, NY is gearing up to entice AMD to build its proposed $3.2 billion fab at the Luther Forest Technology Campus.

By Ann Steffora Mutschler, Senior Editor -- EDN, March 6, 2008

As part of a larger statement about its Fab4x in New York, an Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) executive said the company’s goal is to bring more of its chip manufacturing back to the US, according to local news reports from the region.

It is believed that this goal could help the microprocessor maker gain the approvals its needs for its proposed Luther Forest deal; however, AMD spokesman Gary Silcott said there is nothing new in terms of the status of the project. He also noted that AMD is still optimistic, but the company has not yet even decided whether to proceed.

With two fabs in Dresden, Germany and foundry partners in Asia, AMD’s Terry Caudell, director of wafer manufacturing strategies said, “We want to bring that technology back home again,” in the news report.

Meanwhile, the city of Malta, NY is preparing to discuss the benefits of AMD building a $3.2 billion fab at the Luther Forest Technology Campus.

The discussion is expected to center on negotiation strategies the town board will enter into with AMD. Also, the board is also scheduled to appoint an 11-person Luther Forest Technology Campus Community Response Board that will interact directly with AMD, the report added.
