&& PREVIOUS FINALIST | MAIN | NEXT FINALIST >> Category: Sensors WINNER: Truesense image-sensor technology (Kodak)  In the past, designers have based most color-image sensors on the Bayer pattern, which Kodak developed in 1976. Kodak’s new image-sensor technology employs a color-filter pattern that adds panchromatic pixels to the red, green, and blue pixels of the standard Bayer pattern to create an environment in which a significantly higher proportion of light strikes the sensor. Kodak developed new software algorithms to work with the raw data that these sensors capture, providing a two- to four-times increase in sensitivity and retaining the overall image quality and color fidelity of the sensor.For camera designers, the new pattern allows for the development of cameras that can take better pictures under low light or reduce motion blur when imaging moving subjects. In addition, with the ability to design smaller pixels, leading to higher resolutions in a given optical format without compromising image sensitivity, camera makers in a range of applications can improve the fundamental performance of their systems. Kodak’s next-generation color-filter pattern is appropriate to both CMOS and CCD image sensors, making it available to applications ranging from consumer cameras to applied imaging markets, such as security monitoring. |
