FROM EDN EUROPE: Gateway boards simplify VoIP designs
By Graham Prophet -- EDN, January 8, 2004
Deployment of VoIP (voice-over-Internet Protocol) telephony is proliferating as corporate networks expand, according to VoIP provider AudioCodes. The company is a supplier of intellectual property for the VoIP function, which it embodies at all levels, from chips to complete systems; its most recent introduction is the Ardito media-gateway-board family.
You can use the boards to build, for example, a voice-response-system server; they bridge the IP and conventional PSTN (public-switched telephone-network) domains without requiring detailed design in the protocols involved. You can record and play back traffic to and from either domain, mix conferencing calls from both for "extended-network-telephony" systems, and implement multiple functions, such as echo cancellation, fax/modem/voice detection, and energy/speech detection. The boards—in cPCI format—use the AudioCodes' VoiPerfect technology and handle 120 to 480 channels. (You can also obtain the technology embedded in a TI DSP part, among other formats.)
