SMT LED shrinks to match applications

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, May 27, 2004

Agilent Technologies claims that its ChipLED surface-mount device is the smallest available, well-suited to the latest mobile and handheld devices. Devices in the HSMx-C120 series measure 1.6×1 mm and are 0.6 mm high, compatible with the industry-standard 0603 foot-print (Picture).

The LEDs are available in green, red, orange, and blue, based on various semiconductor technologies, such as aluminum-indium-gallium-phosphorus, aluminum-gallium-arsenide, and indium-gallium-nitride, for differing intensities, which can range from 8 mcd (gallium-phosphorus orange) to 145 mcd (indium-gallium-nitride green). The LEDs sell for 8 cents to 40 cents (1000).
