Ceramic device is a good listener—ultrasonically

By Bill Schweber -- EDN, November 27, 2003

Targeting applications such as bill changers, paper scanners, and robotics, the Murata MA200D1 series features increased sensitivity and wider directivity than previous models from the company (Picture). It operates at approximately 220 kHz with a ±20-kHz bandwidth and has internal capacitance of 2300 pF at 1 kHz.

When you drive the units with a 10V p-p test-signal burst, facing an aluminum reflecting plate at a distance of 150 mm, its output is 1 to 2.5 V p-p; sensitivity attenuation is 3 dB compared with 20 dB for previous units. Directivity increases to 20° versus 7° in previous units at the –6-dB point, and response and ringing times are shorter than those of their predecessors. The disk-shaped device, with approximately 18-mm diameter, operates at –20 to +70°C and sells for $17.80 (sample quantities).
