Quadrature demodulator takes gigahertz IF to baseband

The AD8348 broadband quadrature demodulator from Analog Devices lets you perform IF-to-baseband conversions over 50 MHz to 1 GHz for digital-radio architectures (Picture). The 28-lead IC includes a demodulator, a dual mixer core, and a local-oscillator phase splitter. In addition, it incorporates a variable-gain amplifier that is linear in decibels over a 45-dB range and requisite single-ended-to-differential amplifiers to drive baseband A/D converters. Demodulation bandwidth is 60 MHz, suitable for high-order modulation formats, such as QAM, QPSK, and 8-PSK, such as those that find use in the cellular infrastructure of CDMA, W-CDMA, GSM EDGE, and other wireless links. The AD8348 sells for $4.95 (10,000).
