Analog front ends increase ADSL's reach
-- EDN, January 18, 2001
LSI Logic's 14-bit SpeedReach linear-analog front ends have a low analog-input-referred-noise floor of -160 dBm/Hz. The devices connect at distances as far as 27,000 ft, although line conditions have to be nearly perfect to achieve this range, and the data rate drops significantly below 1.5 Mbps. You can realistically achieve data rates of 1.5 Mbps at distances of 16,000 ft.
For customer-premises equipment, the SpeedReach family includes the AR8201 with an integrated 5V line driver and digitally controlled crystal oscillator and the AR8101, a lower pin-count alternative with an integrated 5V line driver but an external oscillator. The devices consume 1W while operating at 13 dBm on the line and support full-rate ITU G.992.1 (G.dmt) and G.992.2 (G.lite). The AR8201 comes in a 100-pin LQFP and costs $14 (100,000). Samples are available now, and production quantities will become available in the second quarter. The AR8101 comes in an 80-pin LQFP and costs $12 (100,000). Samples are available, and production quantities will be available in March.
