IP-security processor targets firewalls, routers
-- EDN, January 18, 2001
The 2.4-Gbps BCM5840 IP (Internet Protocol)-security processor from Broadcom provides wire-speed encryption to speeds as high as OC-48 in network applications, such as routers, firewalls, switches, and access servers. The device supports IPSec encryption and authentication on any packet size, offering 3DES-CBC, HMAC-SHA-1, or HMAC-MD5 IPSec processing. Using a POS-PHY Level 3 interface for a flow-through architecture, the device supports multiple keying mechanisms, allowing keys to be sent directly in-band with packets or stored in the on-chip security-association cache, which can support as many as 2048 security associations. Currently available for sampling, the BCM5840 comes in 208-pin MQFPs and costs $230 (1000); production quantities will be available in the second quarter.
