EDN's 27th Annual Microprocessor/Microcontroller Directory

The party is at the high end

By Markus Levy, Technical Editor -- EDN, September 14, 2000

Welcome to the year 2000 version of the EDN Microprocessor/Microcontroller Directory: It's the 27th consecutive year of this directory, and we certainly have something to celebrate. The entire processor industry has seen incredible growth, but the real parties have been happening in the 32-bit, 64-bit, and VLIW fraternities. Although a number of new architectures have sprung up, processor vendors have primarily focused on delivering newer versions or upgrades of their existing architectures. Nevertheless, the competition and the selection complexity have increased significantly.

To help you home in on what's new, we focus the majority of this directory on the partiers with the high-end architectures. But you'll also find detailed tables on a variety of popular devices in all processor categories.

The tables describe an assortment of architectural and device features that will help you quickly compare the important processor differences. These processor tablesinclude the standard fare of features and contain information related to EEMBC (EDN Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium, www.eembc.org). EEMBC's goal is to provide the certified benchmark scores to help you select the processor for your next design. Rather than fill an entire table with the processor scores, EDN has indicated which companies are members of EEMBC and which processor families have scores available on the Web site (indicated with an asterisk).

Cahners' MicroDesign Resources (MDR), creators of the Microprocessor Report, has also helped to fulfill your need for microprocessor knowledge. Although this issue should provide ample information to satisfy your initial information search, be sure to check out MDR's special EDN Microprocessor Directory Web site at www.mdronline.com/edn as an additional source of processor architectural details.
