Simulator brings RF issues to a head

Testing the human-relevant RF characteristics for your latest wireless device, such as antenna-field patterns of cell phones, is easier with the Dry Phantom from Murata Electronics North America (Picture). It mimics the RF reflection, absorption, and dissipation of EM waves for the upper torso, arm, and head. Instead of the liquid cores used in previous wet phantoms, which required maintenance and had some stability problems, this one uses a combination of dielectrics materials, including ceramic powder, polymers, and carbon powders, molded into the correct configuration. Be prepared to pay for the privilege of having this extra head around your lab: It costs $33,000 but performs better and provides more than the older, $20,000, liquid-based, head-only phantoms that lacked an upper torso and arm.
