96-line I/O module targets real-time applications
-- EDN, January 20, 2000
The new PCM-UIO96A module from WinSystems packs 96 points of bidirectional digital I/O into a single PC/104 bus card (Picture). You can program each I/O line to operate as a TTL-compatible input, output, or output with read-back. Module inputs can source 0.4 mA per channel, and each output line can sink 12 mA.
A unique feature of the PCM-UIO96A allows you to monitor real-time edge transitions for 48 of the I/O lines and generate a processor interrupt to signal input changes. Hardware interrupts eliminate the software routines and processor time to scan inputs for transitions. You can enable and program the input transition polarity on a bit-by-bit basis. The module hardware also latches each input transition to ensure the capture of short pulses.
The PCM-UIO96A operates from a 5V supply and consumes a meager 120 mW of no-load power. The module's extended temperature range of -40 to +85°C fits most industrial applications. The PCM-UIO96A is available now and sells for $225.
