Qualcomm, Ericsson demo LTE-to-3G handover
Peter Clarke, EE Times -- EDN, February 2, 2012
LONDON—Mobile communications company Qualcomm Inc has announced that, working with Ericsson AB, it has completed a voice call handover from an LTE mobile network to a WCDMA network using SRVCC (Single Radio Voice Call Continuity) technology.SRVCC is a 3GPP specified feature that enables continuity of service by seamlessly switching to a WCDMA network when a consumer on voice-over-LTE call leaves the LTE network's coverage area.
The successful LTE-to-WCMDA transfer occurred on December 23, 2011, using a handset based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 application processor that is 3G/LTE multimode capable. Qualcomm plans to repeat the demonstration at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, which takes place February 27 to March 1, 2012.
SRVCC follows on from the launch of CSFB (circuit-switched fallback) technology on smartphones in 2011.
