Product breaks 100 million-gate barrier

By Gabe Moretti -- EDN, 10/11/2001

Quickturn has introduced the Cobalt Ultra verification tool, the newest member of its Cobalt (concurrent-broadcast array-logic-technology) family (Picture). The new product uses a massive array of custom emulation ASICs, providing more than five times the capacity and double the runtime performance of its predecessor. Its high-speed compiler goes from RTL to verification at a typical rate of 4 million ASIC gates per hour on a single workstation. Cobalt Ultra is scalable and expandable to support as many as 112 million ASIC gates and 64 Gbytes of memory.

Quickturn fabricated the ASICs on a 0.12-micron, seven-layer-copper process technology. The emulator supports as many as 32 simultaneous users running any combination of cosimulation and in-circuit-emulation tasks. It retains the software environment of its family predecessor, providing simulation, simulation acceleration, and in-circuit emulation.

With the addition of a Quickturn SpeedBridge custom-environment design, teams can use Cobalt Ultra for multimedia, wireless, networking, and computer designs. Price depends on user configuration and starts at $5.5 million.
