PC/104 module unites embedded I/O

By Warren Webb -- EDN, 10/25/2001

The new PC/104-compliant Adio-104 module from Scidyne blends your most needed analog-and digital-I/O functions in a single unit (Picture). The device includes 16 single-ended, 12-bit analog inputs that are independently programmable and operate in ±10, ±5, 5, or 10V ranges. You can increase the dynamic range to 14 bits with range-switching software techniques. The ADC acquires data as fast as 50k samples/sec. A special feature allows simultaneous acquisition on identically configured analog input pairs. The module also includes eight 12-bit analog outputs with six jumper-selectable output ranges. An onboard dc/dc converter permits bipolar and 10V ranges while operating the module from a 5V host supply.

The Adio-104 also provides three 8-bit digital-I/O ports. You can program the bidirectional Port A in software for input or output operation on a 4-bit nibble basis. Port B has six bidirectional channels and two dedicated input channels. Output Port C has four high-power MOSFET channels for directly driving relay coils, indicators, and solenoids.

A standard J1/P1 stack-through connector allows the Adio-104 to reside anywhere within an 8-bit PC/104 stack. Adding an optional J2/P2 connector provides 16-bit stack-through compatibility and access to all upper interrupt-request lines. The list price for the Adio-104 is $352 (100), and availability is from stock to three weeks.
