Clock generators target switching, routing use
By Nicholas Cravotta -- EDN, 11/22/2001
Cypress Semiconductor's CY22xx family of field-programmable clock generators operates as fast as 200 MHz and provides stable, configurable clock outputs for commercial and consumer applications, including switches, routers, computers, DVD players, and digital cameras (Picture). Programmable clocks let you generate multiple clock frequencies from a single source and reduce inventory by having the same device generate different clock signals in different applications.
Each member has a serial interface, 2.5V outputs, and a digital voltage-controlled crystal oscillator. Each input frequency passes through a PLL and three multipliers. If two output frequencies can use the same P and Q multiplier, the same PLL can generate both of them. The crystal load capacitance has 256 settings spaced approximately 0.1 pF apart. You can also adjust the drive strength to one of four levels and reprogram levels based on changes made to clock-trace layouts during design iterations. Available with one to three PLLs and packaged in 16-pin TSSOPs, the devices range in cost from $1.90 to $2.95 (10,000). Production volumes are available now.
