Light-piped LED casts widespread glow

The FLP-O series of LED light pipes from Bivar includes panel-mount oval lenses with a viewing angle as wide as 120° (Picture). Available in a variety of colors and with superbright intensities, the assembly's enhanced viewing angle makes it suitable for applications in which the viewer is not directly in front of the panel. The flexible light-pipe LED assembly lets you place the LED itself anywhere from a few centimeters to 100m from the lens, which offers two benefits: It frees you from mechanical-placement constraints of a pc board's location with respect to the front panel, and it eliminates an ESD path from the front panel to your circuitry. The oval lens cap occupies slightly more than 3×6 mm; its mounting hole is a little smaller than those dimensions. Typical price in production quantities is $1.50.
