Single-width, 3U, CompactPCI power supply delivers 400W at 60°C

By Dan Strassberg -- EDN, 12/6/2001

Thanks to clever packaging and innovative thermal design, Tracewell Power's TTX-series single-slot, 3U-height, 48V-dc (nominal; 36 to 72V range) input, CompactPCI power-supply modules deliver 400W with airflow of 400 lfm in a 60°C ambient temperature (Picture). Prices start at $500 for the modules, which produce 5V at 35A, 3.3V at 45A, and + or –12V at 1.5A. Dissipation is 60W at full load (87% efficiency). A 6U version delivers 700W (5V at 60A, 3.3V at 90A, 12V at 7.5A). Power density is approximately 100W/in.3 Proprietary load-sharing techniques allow you to connect in parallel the outputs of as many as eight modules without loss of efficiency. Because the modules accept a dc input and deliver dc outputs, the products use no dc/dc-converter submodules, but they do use dc/dc conversion.

The submodule that you may notice on the units contains proprietary control and monitoring circuits. These circuits provide detailed information about the module's status, including the temperature of each of the switching FETs. Although this information is more detailed than that available from other CompactPCI supplies, thereby eliminating the need for derating in certain situations, the units still fully comply with the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers' Group CompactPCI pinout and interface specifications.
