Companies team up for open-source group
By Staff -- EDN, 12/20/2001
Borland, IBM, Merant, QNX Software Systems, Rational Software, RedHat, SuSE, and TogetherSoft have announced the formation of Eclipse.org, an open consortium of providers of development tools. The consortium manages the Eclipse Platform, a new open-source environment for creating, integrating, and deploying application-development tools for use across a range of computing technology.
Through the platform, you can seamlessly integrate tools from several vendors on Windows, Linux, and QNX workstations. Eclipse provides source-code building blocks, plug-in frameworks, and running examples that facilitate application-tool development. It also includes a sample plug-in-based IDE for creating Java applications.
